The Soul of GardensL'âme des jardins

“The soul of gardens shelters the greatest sum of serenity at man's disposal.”Ferdinand Bac, quoted by Luis Barragán on receiving the Pritzker Architecture Prize, 1980

A Bonaparte with a pencilUn Bonaparte au crayon

Ferdinand Bac was born Ferdinand-Sigismond Bach in Stuttgart in 1859. He was the illegitimate grandson of Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, and a second cousin of Napoleon III, and he grew up on the margins of the Second Empire court. In Paris he made his name as a caricaturist, illustrator and writer. His circle included Richard Wagner, Victor Hugo, Paul Verlaine, Guy de Maupassant, Giuseppe Verdi and Charles Gounod.

He was past fifty when he found his vocation. After the gardens of the Villa Croisset in Grasse in 1912, he turned his drawing, his writing and his sense of decoration to a single idea: the house and the garden as one work of art, rooted in the Mediterranean of antiquity.

The commission, 1919La commande, 1919

In 1919 Émile and Caroline-Octavie Ladan-Bockairy, friends of Bac from Compiègne, bought a farmhouse that had run a two-hundred-year-old olive grove above Garavan and had belonged to the philosopher Alfred Fouillée. They wanted a winter home, and they invited Bac to come and live with them. From 1920 they gave him a free hand. He rebuilt and enlarged the house, which he called the Palazzo, raised it to three levels and drew every detail: façades, furniture, ironwork, stained glass in blues and greens, and the paintings on the walls, which he executed himself.

The work took seven years and was completed in 1927. When it was finished, the house and the garden could no longer be read apart.

The garden, seven hectares at the outset and just over three today, is not meant to be seen from a single point. Bac designed it as a walk: a sequence of terraces and garden rooms joined by paths, each built around a theme from Antiquity, Greece, Spain, Venice or Tuscany. From the west front, a winding path leads to the Trompe-l'oeil Garden, then on past the Bella Vista, the Palladio pavilion, the cypress alley to the Spanish Basin, the altar of Orpheus and the Garden of the Obelisk, up to the Path of Eurydice at the summit.

Bac played with proportion and depth. In the Jar Alley, the Tuscan jars diminish in size along the path to lengthen the perspective. Pools mirror the garden buildings, screens of greenery open onto the old town of Menton, and the Obelisk, standing over its lotus basin, answers the bell tower of the Basilica of Saint-Michel. Olive trees several centuries old, pines, cypresses, lemon trees and a carob tree said to be a thousand years old frame the views.

A painted houseUne maison peinte

Inside, Bac treated every room as a stage set. On the ground floor, the piano terreno, a sequence of murals evokes Mare Nostrum. The dining room carries his landscapes of temples and headlands, and from its loggia the old town of Menton appears in a composition that echoes the Acropolis. The Salon of Frescoes and the music room, set in an apse, open through wrought-iron gates onto the Garden of Homer, a secret patio of Andalusian inspiration. The Venetian room now holds the archives of the estate.

A monumental staircase, between two stained-glass windows and under a Murano chandelier, rises to the piano nobile. There, six bedrooms open off a central hall, each a different shore of the Mediterranean: the Green, Vine, Violet, Parrot, Greek and Spanish rooms, from Sicily to Greece, from Cordoba to Granada.

Inveni portum. Spes et fortuna, valete. Sat me lusistis; ludite nunc alios.

“I have reached harbour. Hope and fortune, farewell. You have played with me enough; play now with others.” The classical epigram Bac inscribed on the house.

In 1925 Bac presented Les Colombières to the world as a complete work of art, and exhibited at the Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs in Paris. He set out his ideas in two books, Les Colombières and Jardins enchantés. A young Mexican architect, Luis Barragán, read them and heard Bac speak about gardens.

Fifty-five years later, receiving the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Barragán named Bac as the source of his longing to create a perfect garden, and quoted the words Bac had written about Les Colombières. The line from this house to Barragán's work is documented by Barragán himself.

Between the wars, Les Colombières was counted among the most important houses and gardens of the Côte d'Azur. Jean Cocteau and Marshal Joffre were among its guests. Bac went on to transform La Fiorentina at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat for the Countess of Beaumont.

Decline and rescueDéclin et sauvetage

During the Second World War the house served as a military hospital, and its decline continued for decades. In the early 1990s a last-minute listing saved the estate from speculative development: house and gardens were classified Monument historique on 3 October 1991.

In 1995 Michael and Margaret Likierman, then living in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, bought the estate. Margaret, a passionate horticulturist, wanted a climate kinder to her garden than the mistral; Michael had led Habitat France. Over five years, with specialists and craftsmen, they restored the house and the garden, and moved in in 2000. Margaret led the work on the gardens and their replanting. Further work continued until 2020, supervised by a landscape architect and a chief architect of historic monuments with the support of the Ministry of Culture. It modernised parts of the house and added a swimming pool, an independent apartment and new terraces of exotic and subtropical planting.

A house to be lived inUne maison à vivre

A century after Bac began, Les Colombières remains a private house: the work of one artist, preserved down to its colours and its furniture, set in a garden of mature trees. Its classification protects it; its restoration makes it habitable. It changes hands for the first time since 1995.

Classification is a protection and a commitment: works are authorised by the State and carried out to heritage standards. In return, French law shares the cost of keeping such a house alive. For an owner who lives in Les Colombières and pays income tax in France, upkeep and restoration cost markedly less than their face value.

Repair and maintenance works that receive a State grant are deductible from the owner's total income at 100%, net of the grant. Other qualifying property expenses are deductible at 50% while the house remains private, and at 100% if it is opened to the public. Deduction is from overall income, not only from property income, and no rental is required.

State grantsSubventions de l'État

Works on a classified building may be subsidised by the Ministry of Culture (DRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), at an average rate of 40% of eligible costs, including the architect's fees. Region and département may add their own support. Grants are discretionary and depend on the project and available funds.

Inheritance and giftsSuccession et donation

A classified house, and the furniture that completes its historic or artistic interest, can pass to heirs or donees free of inheritance and gift duties. The heirs sign an agreement with the Ministries of Culture and Finance covering upkeep and opening to the public (for instance 60 days a year between mid-June and September).
